INTERACTIONS WITH DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING FOR FIRST RESPONDERS

Connecting with people who are deaf or hard of hearing doesn’t have to be challenging. Learning the alphabet and a handful of basic signs can completely transform the quality of those interactions. Yet a significant communication gap still exists between first responders and individuals who rely on visual communication.

I developed this course several years ago, and it has since become a required TCOLE training for Texas police officers. While I typically teach an 8‑hour, in‑person class, this platform will offer the streamlined 4‑hour version.

The course features instructional videos, an overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act, information about the specialty license plate available to qualifying deaf or hard of hearing drivers, and plenty of hands‑on signing practice. It is taught by me, a certified TCOLE instructor, and participants will receive 4 hours of official credit.
